ATTENDING THE SYMPHONY

Concert Etiquette

• When the house lights dim, the audience stops talking so that the performance can begin.
• As the concertmaster enters, the audience applauds, and then gets very quiet so that the instruments can be tuned to one pure tone.
• The conductor enters, the audience applauds, then gets very quiet so the concert can begin.
• The audience remains seated throughout the concert, giving its full attention to the orchestra.
• Please hold your applause until the end of the final movement of each piece of music. Watch the conductor and musicians; between movements the conductor will generally keep her baton up in the “ready” position.
• Once a program begins and is in progress, no one will be allowed to enter the performance hall. Enter or leave the concert hall only between musical numbers or at intermission. The ushers are instructed to keep doors closed during a performance. For safety reasons, patrons are encouraged to remain in their seats during a program. There are occasions when there may be a total blackout, making it difficult to see.
• Use the intermission for trips to the water fountain, restrooms, etc.
• Please remove hats. They can restrict the view of other patrons.
• No smoking, alcohol or firearms are allowed on campus.
• Please do not put your feet on the seats.
• NO Food or Drinks are allowed. Only bottled water is permitted in the performance hall. This includes candy and gum.
• Please remember to turn off or silence all cell phones and pagers.
• Be considerate of other patrons and take crying babies or fussy children to the lobby.
• Do not allow unattended children to run around in the performance hall or lobby areas. No loitering in or around the auditorium or parking lot areas. We reserve the right to dismiss disruptive patrons.
• No unauthorized personnel are allowed in the control suite, dressing rooms, or other backstage areas.
• Videotaping, recording by any electronic means and flash photography are prohibited in the performance hall area without prior permission.
• If you have any questions, please see the head usher or facility technician.
